About the artists on this recording ...

 

Artie Langston, bass violin - Bassist and composer Artie Langston plays in settings ranging from symphony and pit orchestras to jazz, rock, and blues groups. He can be heard on many recordings, film soundtracks and commercials, and is a musical director and conductor as well.

Artie’s performed on national network television and at such famous venues as The U.S. White House, Carnegie Hall, The Montreux Jazz Festival, The New Orleans Jazz Festival, The Monterey Jazz Festival, The 1990 Osaka World Exposition, and Holland America Line’s Salute to Jazz Cruises to mention but a few.

He has worked with and been featured with artists such as "Snookum" Russell, Louie Jordan, Earl "Fatha" Hines, Lee Konitz, Eddie Harris, Mel Torme, Stephan Grapelli, Carmen McRae, Joe Williams, "Groove" Holmes, Bob Wilbur, Buddy DeFranco, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Woody Herman Orchestra, The Dukes of Dixieland, Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, The Olympia Brass Band (tuba), Alvin Alcorn, Danny Barker, James Booker, Professor Longhair, "Gatemouth" Brown, Chuck Berry, Paul Simon (tuba), Taj Mahal (tuba), Mike Bloomfield, Dan Hicks, The Four Aces, Patti Page, Perry Como, The Ink Spots, and many others.

As a music educator, Langston has taught privately and at several universities. He’s published a method book, Jazz and Swing Bass Fundamentals, and given lecture/clinics in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

 

Tony Horowitz, trumpet/fluegelhorn - By the time he graduated from high school, Tony Horowitz had appeared at Harrah’s, Lake Tahoe and Reno and other high profile venues with such artists as Jimmy Wakely, Tony Pastor, Pearl Bailey and Louis Bellson.

After serving his country in the U.S. Army during Vietnam, Tony resumed his career, joining Ray Charles. Following his tenure with "The Genius", he joined Louis Prima, who dubbed Tony his protege and featured him both on stage and on his recordings, for which Tony did most of the arranging.

After Prima, Horowitz went on to back such artists as Raquel Welch and Lou Rawls and became one of Hollywood’s top studio trumpet players. He can still be heard on the soundtracks of television shows such as Knight Rider, Cheers, Happy Days, and many others. His trumpet is also present in movies including La Bamba, Quicksilver, Walk Proud, and more.

Tony has done albums and live performances with artists such as Sammy Davis Jr., Barry White, Kenny Rogers, Jermaine Jackson, Johnny Mathis, Janis Ian, and dozens of others. He’s also released an album of his original music, This is Tony Horowitz.

Horowitz is an internationally respected trumpet teacher and his book, Warm-Up to Consistency, is already in its second printing. He conducts dozens of clinics/concerts throughout the U.S. and Europe under the banner of United Musical Instruments.

 

Bobby Schiff, piano/synthesizer - Composer, arranger and keyboardist Bobby Schiff has done feature film work with Marvin Hamlisch and television shows such as Laverne & Shirley.

He’s written music for hundreds of films and commercials for such clients as Kimberly-Clark, Sesame Street, National Safety Council, McDonald’s, John Deere, Sears (all the Great American Home Spots), Kraft and Hallmark.

His live work includes playing and directing for Peggy Lee, Bobby Rydell, Mel Torme, Frank D’Rone, The Four Seasons and George Kirby.

One of today’s premier vocal accompanists and arrangers, Schiff plays on, arranges and produces recordings for numerous artists, both vocal and instrumental. He leads one of Chicago’s hottest casual engagement bands, Phoenix.
